About:
The Center for Mathematics and Science Education (CMSE) at the University of Mississippi announces its seventh annual MathCamp summer program for students who will be in the 5th – 8th grades during the 2013 – 2014 school year. The MathCamp program is a four-day overnight camp designed for middle school students who show a significant need for a positive learning experience and a deeper understanding of concepts in mathematics. Teachers can recommend up to two students whom they feel meet such criteria and whom would most likely benefit from this learning experience.
Goals:
The goals of the program are to inspire in students a real interest and to improve their performance in mathematics. MathCamp instruction concentrates on Geometry and Measurement concepts aligning with the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics and the National Council for Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Process Standards. While the main focus is on mathematics, students will also gain a better understanding of science concepts and the capabilities of technology.
Cost:
The 2013 MathCamp season will consist of four one-week sessions for new participants and two alumni camps for returning participants. The Alumni Camp is provided by CMSE at no cost to returning campers. The only fee for first year students to attend the four one-week sessions is a non-refundable seat deposit of $75. However, this fee is reduced to $25 for those students who are eligible to receive free or reduced school lunch.
Application Process:
Current 4th – 7th grade teachers may recommend up to two students who are showing, but not quite reaching, their full potential in mathematics. A committee of CMSE staff members will review the recommendations of eligible students. Only students who are not already high achievers in mathematics and/or who have not already attended MathCamp prior to this year will be eligible for the program. Approximately twenty students will be chosen for each session and invitations will be sent directly to their home address. The recommendation forms must be received in our office no later than Friday, February 15, 2013.
Therefore, if you are a teacher and would like to recommend up to two of your students for the 2013 Summer MathCamp Program, you can complete the on-line recommendation using the form below. Be certain to complete every question, as incomplete recommendations will not be considered.
