STEM Excursions

generate interest in and expose K-12 students to STEM education

The Program

The Center for Mathematics and Science Education (CMSE) at the University of Mississippi is excited to partner with K-12 teachers to provide lasting impressions and valuable learning experiences to students through the STEM Exposure Excursion Program! The purpose of this program is to generate interest in and expose K-12 students to STEM education and the University of Mississippi. Through this program, the CMSE will provide coordination and logistical assistance to teachers by filling the day of the excursion with STEM-focused opportunities while getting the most from the visit to campus.

Program Details

Teachers will be asked to clarify the goals of the excursion on the Excursion Request Form. The goals identified by the teacher will be used to plan a beneficial excursion aimed to meet the needs of the students. A few questions that may be used to define these goals are:

What would you like students to get out of the trip?

What would you like for them to be exposed to?

How can we inspire them on their educational journey in the STEM fields?

How should the trip align with your curriculum?

The structure of each excursion is organized based on two specific grade bands:

Kindergarden - 6th Grade

This grade band will participate in a “STEM Day” held at the Jackson Avenue Center on the campus of the University of Mississippi. During the STEM Day, students will be broken into groups and will then participate in station rotations. The stations will include an activity or demonstration from each of the STEM fields. The STEM activities will be designed around current grade level curriculum and standards.

7th Grade - 8th Grade

This grade band will participate in a variety of activities, demonstrations, tours, and opportunities around the campus of the University of Mississippi. On the Excursion Request Form, teachers will be asked to identify which specific activities they are interested in. Possible examples could include:

Tour of the Center for Manufacturing Excellence

Tour of the National Center for Physical Acoustics

Demonstration of Robotics, Engineering, and/or Physics

Visit to the Mobile Planetarium

Explore the UM Biological Field Station

The CMSE staff appreciate as much advance notice as possible but request take at least 1 month to organize and plan a successful excursion.

Excursions are typically scheduled on weekdays and usually begin at 9:00AM and conclude by 2:00PM. However, these times can be adjusted to fit the group’s specific scheduling needs.

Although there are some limitations to the exposure excursion program, we try our best to accommodate as many students as possible. Each excursion will bring its own limitations. After completing the Excursion Request Form, each individual request will be considered and further communication will take place via email.
