  • Establish expectations for becoming leaders within your schools and Mississippi science teacher community
  • Understand the components and expectations of the 2018 Mississippi College- and Career-Readiness Standards
  • Expand understanding of science content relevant to the middle and high school science classroom
  • Identify effective instructional practices and lesson planning components for the secondary science classroom
  • Date: June 24 –  28, 2019
  • Time: 8:30AM – 4:30PM daily (Registration begins at 8:00AM each day)

      • New Classroom Location: Room 102 inside the Jackson Avenue Center. Please enter through the doors that are directly to the right of Malco Movie Theater and main entrance to the old bookstore. 
  • Lunch: Includes one-hour lunch break (on your own) from 12:00PM – 1:00PM each day

    • Due to time constraints, it will be best to stay on or near Jackson Avenue when eating out for lunch. You may choose to bring your own lunch, but please be advised that an onsite refrigerator or microwave will not be available.
  • Dress: Feel free to dress according to your comfort, provided that it is casual-professional. You may want to bring a light jacket or sweater as the classroom may be cold.
  • Technology: Please bring your laptop if you choose to use it during Institute activities.
  • Parking pass
  • Please print this parking pass to place on your dashboard when on campus during the week of June 24 – 28, 2019.
  • This pass will enable you to park in any legal space on campus as long as it is not reserved by any special signage or a service lot. Visitors must park in the spaces between the white lines at the Jackson Avenue Center. The yellow lined spaces are strictly for commercial parking. The visitor permit does not allow you to park in the pavilion garage, metered parking, or in handicap spaces without a valid ADA credential. 
  • Roommate List
  • The hotel rooms will be booked and covered by the project. You are only responsible for additional room costs and incidentals, if necessary.
  • Housed participants will stay at the Courtyard by Marriot Oxford at 305 Jackson Avenue East, Oxford, MS 38655. For more details, please visit the Courtyard by Marriot Oxford website.
    • Check-In: Sunday, June 23 after 3:00PM
    • Check-Out: Friday, June 28 before 11:00AM
  • If you prefer different accommodations, you will be responsible for making your own reservations and covering the costs associated with your stay. Please contact April Kilpatrick to communicate this preference. 
  • At the conclusion of the Summer Institute, you will be eligible for 3.5 CEUs. In order to receive the CEUs, you must be present for the entire Summer Institute. The CEUs cannot be prorated. SEMI credits will also be available in lieu of CEUs, if requested. 
  • Please note: You are encouraged to complete the Payment Information Survey and Form W-9 prior to arrival at the Summer Institute; however, time will be allotted for all necessary form completions on Day 1.
  • Stipend: $50/ day (Maximum $250)
  • Travel Allowance: $30/day (Maximum $150)
  • Hotel Accommodations: 5-night stay provided by project if distance traveled meets eligibility requirements
  • Instructional materials provided by the project

Fall 2019 Follow-Up

  • Investigate formative assessment strategies for the science classroom
  • Continue development of lesson planning practices to include assessment
  • Continued leadership development
  • Challenges and successes with implementing the 2018 Mississippi College- and Career-Readiness Standards

Event Details:

  • Departure Date: Friday, Sept. 20, 2019
  • Last Day to Book: Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2019
  • Special Rate: $99/night (plus 9% taxes and incidental fees, if applicable)
  • 0.6 CEUs available for those attending the fall semester follow-up session
  • Travel Allowance: Mileage will be reimbursed at the current federal rate ($.58/mile) up to a maximum reimbursement of $50
  •  Completion Stipend: $50 based on completed assignment (as instructed)

Mississippi Science Teachers Association (MSTA) Conference

  • October 27 – 29, 2019
  • More information to come. Please check out the MSTA website for current details. 
  • Teachers who wish to obtain CEU credits for attending the MSTA Conference will be responsible for obtaining required documentation and paying any associated costs.
  • Registration: Reimbursement of $85 (early bird rate)
  • Travel Allowance: $100 flat rate

Spring 2020 Follow-Up

  • Analyze student work samples from the science classroom
  • Continue development of lesson to include assessment
  • Continued leadership development
