Middle Math Institutes: Number System, Ratio, & Proportion
In the middle grades, students are transitioning from a focus on computation to applying these skills to more real-world settings. Understanding our number system, the properties of rational and irrational numbers, and making connections to previously learned skills will allow teachers to develop a coherent learning experience for middle grades students. Developing a flexible understanding of ratios, rates, and proportional relationships provide students with tools that can be applied in a variety of situations.
This institute is one of four in the CMSE Middle Math Institutes. Educators who complete all four institutes will be eligible to receive a Middle Level Mathematics (901) Supplemental Endorsement.
The online institute is composed of the following activities and requirements:

Weekly Virtual Class Meetings
Weekly Independent Assignments
Content Post-Assessment
Participants should expect to spend approximately 3 hours each week participating in discussions and completing assignments.
Institute Begins: September 27, 2021

Week 1: Pre-assessment & Introduction to the Number System
Week 2: Computation with Rational Numbers
Week 3: Properties of Rational & Irrational Numbers
Week 4: Introduction to Ratios & Rates
Week 5: Using Ratio Reasoning to Solve Problems
Week 6: Introduction to Proportions
Week 7: Using Proportional Reasoning to Solve Problems
Week 8: Instructional Tools for Teaching Proportions & Post-Assessment
Weekly assignments will be due by midnight on Sunday night.
Virtual Discussions will be held each Tuesday from 6:00 – 7:30 pm.

2.4 CEUs
CEUs are available upon successful completion of the institute. All institute expectations, including assignments and participation in live virtual discussions, must be completed to be eligible for CEUs. Please note that CEUs cannot be prorated.
CEU Processing
CEU credits are processed electronically by North Mississippi Education Consortium. Please allow 3-4 weeks for processing. Participants will be notified via email from NMEC once credits are available for download.
