Math Leadership Short Course
Schools and districts are working diligently to meet the needs of families and students in both face-to-face and online environments. What should mathematics learning look like as we transition into alternative formats? This short online course will present timely content and provide school and district leaders a forum to collaborate and share ideas about the best way to address students’ mathematics learning needs.
Course Begins: August 1, 2020
Course Ends: August 8, 2020
Participants will watch 4 one-hour webinar presentations from national leaders in mathematics education. Each webinar is followed by a short guided reflection on the content presented. The course will conclude with a live, online discussion among participants. Participants can choose from two discussion times to participate.

All course assignments must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. Saturday, August 8, 2020. At that time, the course will close and no additional assignments will be accepted.
Session 1: What Should Math Learning Look Like When We Get Back to School?
This beginning of a new school year will be all new, for everyone! Let’s come together and look at challenges, opportunities, and strategies as we work to meet the needs of each and every student as well as supporting families and communities.
Session 2: Humanizing Online Mathematics Teaching: Possibilities and Resistance
This webinar explores building a beloved classroom community, fostering equitable participation, engaging students in collaborative group work, connecting mathematics to students’ lives and the world we are in, and centering trauma-informed and healing-centered practices in the online classroom. We will also explore resisting oppressive and inequitable aspects of shifts to distance learning.
Session 3: Mathematics Leadership in Times of Unprecedented Change: Catalyzing, Building, and Sustaining Positive Change
What opportunities do we, as mathematics education leaders, have as we look toward the beginning of the new school year? We acknowledge the challenges and explore what decisions and opportunities exist to support our students and teachers. Also learn about unintended consequences, the potential to exacerbate current challenges, and alternatives to support each and every student in learning mathematics.
Session 4: Opportunities and Challenges at District and School Levels: Making Back to School and Teaching Mathematics Work for All Students and Teachers
As a building or district administrator, are you approaching back to school with fear or excitement? This is uncharted territory, and the beginning of this school year will have a lasting impact on the lives of your students and teachers. Explore recommendations for helping to create structures and policies to meet the needs of each and every student in mathematics.
Discussion Session
Live Discussion with other participants to discuss upcoming challenges, plans, and issues facing math leaders across the state. Live discussion times are August 7, 2020 10:00 a.m. OR 4:00 p.m.
